The Illusion of Being: Yugen Blakrok Unveils a Universe

The Illusion of Being: Yugen Blakrok Unveils a Universe

Welcome to your heaven.

That’s the phrase that echoed in my head within the first few minutes of Yugen Blakrok’s The Illusion of Being — and honestly, it never left. Some albums are written, others are summoned. This one feels like it was excavated from ancient memory, channelled from beyond the veil. It doesn’t just speak; it vibrates through you — a kind of resonance for those who see through layers. This is sonic archaeology, language layered like sediment, each verse revealing a deeper truth.

Yugen has always existed in a league of her own — a mythical presence in the global underground. Return of the Astro-Goth and Anima Mysterium built the foundations. This one shatters the roof. The Illusion of Being is bolder, rawer, and more refined all at once. The alchemy here is undeniable: part ancient wisdom, part quantum poetry, fully alive. With production led by longtime collaborator and sound-sculptor Kanif The Jhatmaster, this album travels realms — from earthbound grunge to cosmic trip-hop, to pure boom bap wrapped in smoke and prophecy.

“Mesmerize” opens the gate, and from there the descent — or ascent — begins. The guitars growl, the flutes whisper, and the drums feel like ancestral memory. “Osiris Awakens” (ft. Mohama Saz) is an early highlight — hypnotic, full of sacred pulse and shadow. Then comes “Fighter Mantra”, a war cry for the soul, letting the listener know this journey isn’t for decoration — it’s for transmutation.

But it’s with “Tessellator” (ft. Cambatta) that the sky truly cracks open. This track is a spell. Loudmic’s cuts slice through the beat like ritual blades, while Yugen’s delivery rides the rhythm with effortless menace. Cambatta matches her bar for bar in density and mystique, but make no mistake — she still owns the track, grounded and celestial all at once.

The journey continues through “Earthlinguist” and “The Grand Geode” featuring the equally otherworldly Sa-Roc, creating a dual goddess energy that feels like a transmission from deep space. “Milario” and “Loner” leave emotional bruises in the best way — introspective, haunting, and honest. And then there’s “Regrettably” (ft. Hannah Allen) — the final, vulnerable exhale. A soft but potent outro that closes the portal gently, as if placing a protective seal over everything that came before it.

The sonic landscape is diverse, but never disjointed. From grunge guitars to meditative flutes, every texture serves the story. Contributions from Francesca Terberg on cello, Cristina Espinos on flute, and Jordi Busque Hernandez on guitar don’t just complement — they amplify the spell. The album also features cuts from Loudmic and DJ KCL, ensuring the turntablism is as crisp and rooted as the verses themselves.

What sets this album apart is that Yugen never performs — she inhabits. Her voice doesn’t rap at you. It emerges from the ether, echoing the wisdom of the universe, delivered through a vocal monotone that is anything but dull — it’s meditative, surgical, potent. She’s both spirit guide and warrior emcee — introverted philosopher and stage-dominating oracle. This is what strength sounds like when it doesn’t need to announce itself.

Created in collaboration with I.O.T. Records (France) and Iapetus Records (South Africa), and mastered by Alexis Bardinet and Lorenzo Bassaletti, this project cements Yugen’s place not just in South African hip-hop, but on the global stage. Independent, unapologetic, unshakable — she is the one.

If there was ever an album that needed to exist right now, this is it. Not just for hip-hop heads, but for seekers. For those looking for light through the cracks. The Illusion of Being is a mirror, a map, and a mantra.
